Oliver Laxe's ("Fire Will Come") latest is a spiritual road movie exploring themes of physical wandering, borders, and introspection—recurring motifs in the Franco-Spanish filmmaker’s oeuvre.
The film stars Sergi López ("Pan's Labyrinth") as middle-aged Luis, who, consumed by worry over the disappearance of his daughter Mar, travels to Morocco with his young son. He believes she has joined a group of nomadic thrill-seekers in search of the next big rave in the desert. As they tag along with the makeshift caravan in hopes of finding Mar, Luis is pushed to emotional and physical extremes that challenge his understanding of reality. Beyond the pulsing techno soundtrack and the breathtaking desolation of the landscape, "Sirât" (the title refers to the Islamic term for the razor-thin bridge between heaven and hell) offers a bold and sensory experience that evokes both shock and the sublime.
