55th Anniversary Screening!
We’ve got nothing but admiration for Jane Fonda and especially for Jane’s amazing career. Let’s celebrate her, shall we? We hope she keeps making movies forever.
The year is 40,000 on Planet Lythion where Barbarella (Jane!) makes a forced landing during a secret mission to find the lost evil scientist Durand Durand. Once there, she must use her skills, style, and feminine wiles to vanquish evil in the form of robots, monsters, and children armed with sharp-toothed mechanical dolls.
Based on the French comic series of the same name by Jean-Claude Forest and featuring an iconic lounge-inspired soundtrack and oft-imitated production design, Roger Vadim’s cult science-fiction comedy incensed the National Catholic Office for Motion Pictures at the time for its hyper-sexual surrealism.
Now seen as a pop culture cornerstone, it’s a film that’s meant to be seen on the big screen in all its gaudy glory.
