40 Acres
In a near future where food production dictates wealth, Hailey Freeman (Danielle Deadwyler), an African American military veteran, fights to protect her family and farm in rural Canada after a pandemic collapses the global food chain. Haunted by her father's murder, she trusts only war veteran Augusta Taylor (Elizabeth Saunders) and vows to protect what is hers alongside her Indigenous partner Galen (Michael Greyeyes) and their four children.
As their son Emmanuel (Kataem O’Connor) comes of age, he meets Dawn Clever (Milcania Diaz-Rojas), a girl from a neighboring property whose farm is thriving. When he finds her injured, he tries to hide her from his aggressive mother, leading to a confrontation between them. With their future at stake, the family must unite against a militia intent on claiming their land.
“40 Acres” is a gripping post-apocalyptic thriller that addresses themes of xenophobia, fear, and generational trauma.
